Movement of Society for Peace

Called the Mouvement de la Société de la Paix (Arabic حركة مجتمع السلم Harakat Mudschtama ʿ a al- Silm ), short and Hamas (Arabic حماس ), is an Islamist political party in Algeria, which on December 6, 1990 by Mahfoud Nahnah was founded, which was the party leader until his death in 2003. His successor and current party leader is Bouguerra Soltani.

The movement emphasizes officially moderate Islam and is committed to the Muslim Brotherhood.

History

In the parliamentary elections of 2002, the Mouvement de la Société de la Paix won 7% of the vote and sent 38 deputies to the National People's Assembly of Algeria. She is since 2005 part of the government coalition with the National Liberation Movement and the National Democratic collection.

In the 2007 parliamentary elections, Hamas received a total of 9.71 % of the votes and thus won 52 seats in parliament.

In May 2008 Bougerra Soltani was re-elected as party leader of the Mouvement de la Société de la Paix - unlike Abdelmadjid Menasra, the Soltanis rejects participation in the presidential alliance as a minister without portfolio and makes him responsible for the voter decline.
