Mozambican general election, 1999

The parliamentary elections in Mozambique in 1999 were from 3rd to 5th December 1999 at the south-east African and Mozambique were the second multi-party elections in the country's history.

The two major parties in the country FRELIMO and RENAMO made , as in the previous election in 1994, the elections among themselves. FRELIMO, the quasi-state party in the country, won a landslide victory with just under 50 % of the vote, RENAMO, the old counterparty Frelimo from the time of the Mozambican civil war remained the only serious opposition party, with just under 40% of the vote. None of the other approved parties won only 3% of the votes.

RENAMO came for election as a choice Association RENAMO - UE. This composite included except RENAMO to another 10 smaller, largely meaningless parties. Of the 117 seats of the coalition went to RENAMO 99 and 18 to the smaller parties.

The Carter Center, this choice has just as critical as the previous observed, evaluated the electoral process as a " peaceful and orderly ". However, the observer, the FRELIMO has used its exclusive access to the country's media unfairly to his advantage and technical problems and a lack of transparency doubt on the accuracy of the results gave rise to criticism. Renamo opposition against the results were rejected by the official agencies.
