Mozambican general election, 2004
The presidential election in Mozambique (2004 ) was carried out on 1 and 2 December 2004 at the South African state of Mozambique. After 18 years in power, Joaquim Chissano had resigned as president and five candidates vying for the presidency. At the same time the members of the 150 -member National Assembly of the country were selected.
It stood as candidates:
- Armando Guebuza of the ruling Frente da Libertação de Moçambique ( FRELIMO ), which a narrow lead was predicted
- Afonso Dhlakama of the party Resistência Nacional Moçambicana ( RENAMO ), the Mozambican civil war opponents of FRELIMO

The announcement of the winner of the election had been officially expected on 17 December, but were actually only on 21 December before all the results.
Democratic standards
Interior Minister Almerino Manhenje spoke of an election without major problems. International observers, however, criticized a number of irregularities in favor of the ruling FRELIMO. The results listed below are official and controversial figures.
Results
Guebuza won the presidential election with 63.7 % of the vote and took office in February 2005. Dhlakama received 31.7 % of the votes and announced that he did not recognize the results of the election. The other candidates received less than 3% of the votes.
