The Express Samina (Greek Εξπρές Σαμίνα ) was a Greek Ro-Ro ferry which sank on 26 September 2000 after a collision with a rock in the Aegean.

History

The ship was built in 1966 in France ( hull number: F23 ) and delivered Transatlantique in June of the year of Compagnie Générale. It was on ferries in the Mediterranean used ( Nice - Algeria - Corsica and Marseille). With the merger of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique with the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte for Compagnie Generale Trans - mediterraneenne, from 1976, the Société nationale maritime Corse Méditerranée, the ship Mixte came in the summer of 1969 for Compagnie de Navigation for Compagnie Generale Trans - mediterraneenne.

The end of 1981 the ship was sold and renamed Golden Verginia. It was only used between the ports of Brindisi, Piraeus and Haifa.

In 1988 the ship went to Greece to the Piraeus -based company Agapito Bros, which used it in the Aegean. On 18 November 1999, the Greek company Minoan Flying Dolphins bought the ship and called it in to Express Samina. Used it was still in the Aegean Hellas Ferries, a subsidiary of Minoan Flying Dolphins.

Technology and equipment

The ship was powered by two sixteen -cylinder diesel engines of the French manufacturer Pielstick with a total capacity of 10,945 kW. It thus reaching a speed of up to 21 knots.

The ferry had initially a passenger capacity of 1,442 people. Later, she was permitted to continue for up to 1,300 people. For 256 passengers were 79 cabins.

On the car deck that was accessible via a rear ramp, found 170 car space.

Marine Casualty

The Express Samina was on the evening of September 26, 2000 on the way to Parikia on the Cycladic island of Paros, when she collided with the island upstream Portes rocks and sank. 82 of the 500 people who were on board came to death. Gale (7-8 Beaufort) hampered the rescue work, where fishing boats, ships of the Greek coastguard and ships and helicopters of the Royal Navy took part.

2006, five crew members of the Express Samina were sentenced to several years in prison for manslaughter and negligence.
