The launching of the ship took place at the Wärtsilä shipyard in Turku on 17 March 1988. In November 1988 it was completed there and used after the handover to the Royal Viking Lines, the Royal Viking Sun for cruises.

In mid-1994 the ship was sold to the Cunard Line and initially operated without a change of name on. The Royal Viking Sun was overwritten during the merger of Cunard and Seabourn under the parent company Carnival Corporation in late April 2000 to Cunard White Star and renamed without further change of ownership in May 2000 Seabourne Sun and is now operated by Seabourn Cruise Line. Mid-2002, the ship went to the Dutch cruise line, Holland America Line, which operates the ship as Prinsendam.
