Mstislav Dobuzhinsky

Mstislav Walerianowitsch Dobuzhinsky (Russian Мстислав Валерианович Добужинский; * 2 Augustjul / August 14 1875greg in Novgorod, .. † November 20, 1957 in New York) was a Russian painter, a participant in the Artists' Association I Iskusstwa and art critic, and memoir writer.

Life

He was born the son of an officer in Novgorod. The family moved due to the occupation of the father at times. The school ended Mstislav Dobuzhinsky in Vilnius. In the years 1885-1887 he studied at the St. Petersburg Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of the Arts. He continued his training in 1899 continued until 1901 in Munich with Anton Aschbe.

In 1902 he exhibited for the first time and in the same year a member of the Artists' Association I Iskusstwa. After returning to Russia, he taught at various art schools in St. Petersburg before 1922 was professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.

In 1924 he received the intervention by J. Baltruschaitas Lithuanian citizenship and left Russia. In the following years he worked at various theaters in Lithuania and France. Since 1929 Dobuzhinsky is to be regarded as the definitive artist of the Lithuanian State Theatre in Kaunas. He taught at a private art school and participated in Lithuanian publications.

In 1935, he went with the ensemble of Kaunas theater to England. Since 1939 he lived in the United States. He died in 1957 in New York.

At the beginning of his artistic career, in the early 20th century, he was influenced by Art Nouveau. Also known artists of the Silver Age, such as Alexander Nikolaevich Benua and Konstantin Andreyevich Somov influenced his work. Later, his style closely based on symbolism. He pressed to continue in the field of book illustration. He was also responsible for the artistic representation of the magazines I Iskusstwa and Apollo. He also dealt with historical painting ( Peter the Great in Holland - Пётр Великий в Голландии ). In addition, he was responsible for the artistic design of theatrical performances of the Moscow Art Theatre. As a graphic of books he designed books by Pushkin, Hans Christian Andersen, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, among others
