Muhammad II ibn al-Husayn

Muhammad II al -Husayn (* 1810, † September 21, 1859 in La Marsa, Arabic أبو عبد اله محمد باشا باي ) was on May 30, 1855 to September 21, 1859 as Mohammad Bey Bey of Tunis.

Muhammad II succeeds by Ahmad I. al -Husayn (1837-1855), under which the modernization of the country had used. He strove especially to the development of infrastructure and allowed to expand roads and bridges and lay the first telegraph line in Tunisia. Even a Roman aqueduct was restored to improve the water supply of Tunis. Although an attempt was made to finance these measures through increased taxes, the national debt but continued to rise. Thus the country was increasingly the dependence of foreign, especially French banks.

The most important act of Muhammad II was the adoption of the " fundamental act " on September 10, 1857 in the all Tunisians civil rights were guaranteed and privileges and private monopolies were abolished. It should be a " High Council " of 60 members, restrict with controlling and judicial powers, the power of the Beys something. The implementation of this reform, however, met with considerable resistance in the population. Successor to Muhammad II was Muhammad III. al -Husayn ( 1859-1883 ).
