Münchner Freiheit

The Münchner Freiheit (until 1998 Münchener Freiheit ) is a square in Munich's Schwabing district east of the Leopold street. The Munich Freedom is just west of the English Garden.

History

The place was formerly called Feilitzsch place (after Maximilian of Feilitzsch ), from 1933 Danziger freedom. In 1946 he was named Münchener Freiheit in memory of the resistance group Freedom Action Bavaria, which called in April 1945 to surrender to the American forces and the armed uprising against the remaining Nazi units. As a reminder, it was a body set up by Franz Hart 4 m × 0.4 m large bronze plaque attached to the eastern border of the Forum with an inscription 1981. A previously existing street sign attached to the plaque had been lost in the construction of the subway in 1971.

The naming Danziger freedom was based on a call to the traffic control center in since 1933 Nazi- ruled Danzig, in large German cities to call a busy place Danziger freedom to give expression to the demand for a change in the status of the Free City of Danzig. Here it relied on a speech by Joseph Goebbels, which he had held on May 17, 1933, representatives of the German tourism. So there were many German cities places with this name, most of which were renamed after the war.

The place is equipped with a four-track station of the Munich U -Bahn ( splitting of U3 and U6 ) and a bus station, a hub of public transport in the northern Munich. On 12 December 2009, the tram line was opened between 23 and Münchner Freiheit Schwabing Nord. The tram station Münchner Freiheit is covered by a green - white steel construction with a weight of around 400 tons to 18 columns.

Before a resident café, a statue of Helmut Fischer (he played the Monaco Franze in the eponymous TV series by Helmut Dietl ) placed.

During the Advent season, the club Schwabing Christmas Market organized an arts and crafts market on the Münchner Freiheit. Every Thursday there is a weekly market.
