Münstersche Aa in Münster with the Aa - riverside

The 43km long Münstersche Aa is considered an orographic left tributary of the Ems.

Name

In Westphalia, the name Aa is a common name for rivers and streams, which is derived from the Old High German Ache.

Course

It rises in northwestern Westphalia approximately 16 km west of Munster. The source is located west of the main town of the municipality Havixbeck at the northeast slopes of the mountains tree. The Aa flows first a few kilometers to the southeast, east past Roxel, then bends to the north and flows in Münster the 2.3 km long Lake Aa.

After she particularly in its upper reaches - in excess of Münster - was fed by many small streams and this city has passed through, it opens a few kilometers further north in Greven - directly accessible without this city - in the Ems.

Environment

After the Second World War was for inner city - but also parts of the extra-urban - a concreted river bed with trapezoidal profile created during the Aa in Münster, which as far increased the moving speed of the water body, that it was almost impossible for plants and animals, in this section to settle.

The phosphate fertilizer and manure inputs due from agriculture are dramatically high, they burden especially in rural areas, the Münstersche Aa strong. Phosphates in combination with a strong warming of the water in the summer regularly lead to an algal bloom. Since the summer of 2005, there are promising attempts to improve the water quality of Lake Aa by vaccination with precipitants.

Renaturation

In the mid- 1980s thought were made to the restoration of the river in the area of the district Coerde first time. In 1996 the work on the restoration of Munster Aa between the southern end of Lake Aa and house Kump were completed. Over a distance of approximately 1,600 meters in the late 1990s was removed, the concrete bed of the river Aa and the river widened to prevent the imminent due to the lower flow rate risk of flooding. The project was completed in 2002, as well as the applications near Rjasanstraße on Cheruskerring. There the Sohlbefestigung and the slope of Aa has been redesigned to nature for a distance of 145 m. In Havixbeck appropriate measures in the vicinity of the house and stack 2010 2006 were completed in the Havixbecker peasantry Walingen. Also in 2010, a stretch of 320 meters in length was renatured near house Coerde to absorb peak runoff better.

End of July 2011 it was announced that the construction of a second Aa - arm is scheduled for the winter of the same year. This arm is to run between the house and the Kump Aa. In this way, the water should move more quickly to the Aa, so that it can be heated less by the sun, causing the blue-green algae growth is to be reduced. The zoning approval and an environmental impact assessment for the restoration actions have been completed. Only the approval of the policy for this project is still missing. The funds are to be drawn from the " living waters " of the Münster District Administration program. According to the city of Münster, the costs will amount to about 1.8 million euros, of which 80 % will be borne by the State.

Since 2012, the restoration of the arteries near the Huelshoff Street, the Federal Highway 1 and in the downtown area is provided. Furthermore, the riverbed of Munster Aa between the house and the Kump Sentruper road was renatured August 2012, for which almost a million Euros was estimated, of which the state of North Rhine -Westphalia was about 80%. The aim is to improve the water quality of Munster and the Lake Aa Aa by the river is restored to a more natural state, and the deficits are balanced in the water structure. This is the city of Münster on the amount of house Kump a sand trap arise that will prevent further silting of Lake Aa. In addition, the course of Munster Aa is to receive over a distance of approximately 2.6 kilometers, its natural history, including the city of Münster is based on maps from the year 1830. Construction is expected in the summer, to be completed in the fall of 2013. [ Deprecated]

By 2014 it is planned south of the Huelshoff Road by a further 180 meters to 1070 meters to improve the partition to the sleeve Bach ecologically and renature in this way. It is expected that a project duration of approximately eight months at a cost in the amount of 570,000 euros, of which 456,000 euros are to be borne by the Land NRW.

It is also planned as from 2016 a project to remove the inner-city concrete base of the Aa beginnen.Vorlage: Future / In 2 years, the million - project is to last for several decades and affect the entire urban river between Golden Bridge and Canal Street and Aa. Trigger for the project are equally structural defects, as the riverbed begins to disintegrate after 60 years, as well as the reduction of the flow rate through restoration of the river, so that flora and fauna can resettle to improve water quality. The aim is a water quality that allows the use of Aa for swimming for the citizens. In addition to the logistical planning are as specified by the Civil Engineering Office of Munster, particularly in the prevention of slipping of the side walls to see the biggest challenges of the project. Downstream of this project is to bridge the Spiekerhof be redesigned to make the arteries more visible, for which a budget of 450,000 euros is talking.

Without further time dating other projects to restore the patency of the arteries in Beckschems mill ( Holter High Street / Schonebeck ) and at the monastery mill, for ecological enhancement Aa near Schonebeck and to remove the bank stabilization at Walingen are planned.
