Muntiacini

Chinese muntjac ( Muntiacus reevesi )

  • Muntjac ( Muntiacus )
  • Schopf deer ( Elaphodus )

The Muntjakhirsche ( Muntiacinae ) are a subfamily of the deer ( Cervidae ). They live in southern and eastern Asia.

They are rather small deer, which are characterized by a simple antlers. This consists of only one rod with one or two ends and is worn as with almost all deer only by the males. As musk deer and Wasserrehe they have extended maxillary canines to tusks that protrude from the mouth.

The " plesiometacarpale " toe position ( ie, that only the proximal ( applied to the foot ) are parts of the reduced 2nd and 5th toes applicable) may be classified systematically in the vicinity of the Real deer ( Cervinae ) a. This close relationship is also confirmed by molecular genetic.

Genera and species

There are two genera:

The ( authentics ) muntjac ( Muntiacus ) include twelve species, several of which were discovered only in the 1990s. The earlier asked in a separate genus Riesenmuntjak is now also attributed to this genus.

The Schopf Hirsch ( Elaphodus Cephalophus ) is placed in a separate genus because of some features (larger body, smaller canines, smaller antler base ).
