Murgeni

Murgeni is a city in Vaslui county in Romania.

Location

Murgeni is located in Moldova Plateau ( Podişul Moldovei ) on the river Elan, a few kilometers west of the Moldavian border. The district capital Vaslui is located about 55 km north-west.

History

The oldest archaeological finds in the region date back to the Paleolithic era. Murgeni 1466 was first mentioned in a document of the Moldavian prince Stefan cel Mare. The predominantly rural town grew to a local trade center and in 1844 raised to market. 1908 opened a hospital. During World War II came through a bombardment half of the village on fire. From 1950 to 1956 Murgeni was in the wake of former administrative division of Romania seat of a Rajons. 2003 voted the citizens of the municipality for the collection to the city, which was implemented by decision of the Romanian Parliament a year later.

Population

As of the 2002 census lived in Murgeni 7,674 people, including 6,627 Romanians and 1,046 Roma. Approximately 3,600 of them lived in Murgeni itself, the other in the six incorporated villages.

Traffic

Murgeni is located on the railway line from Bârlad after Fălciu. In both directions, however, currently operate (2009) only ever two local trains daily. There are bus connections to Galaţi. Through the city's main roads lead 24A of Bârlad after Huşi and 26 of Murgeni after Galaţi.
