Museum of Contemporary Art Australia

The Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney ( German: Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney ) is an art museum in Sydney. It was opened in November 1991.

Building

The building was originally built for the Maritime Services Board, therefore it is also called MSB building. The government architect W. H. Withers began in 1939 to work on the designs. 1940, the plans due to the participation of Australia have been temporarily suspended for the Second World War. 1944, the plans were continued under WDH Baxter. 1949, the foundation stone was laid in 1952 and the building was opened.

In 1989, the MSB to lack of space. The building was donated to the museum by the government. 1990 extensive restoration and reconstruction measures were initiated, funded by the University of Sydney and The Power Bequest. The reconstruction measures were directed by Andrew Anderson of Peddle Thorpe Company / John Holland Interiors. In 2011/12, the museum was expanded by a new expansion of the Australian architect Sam Marshall and increased by almost 50 percent. The opening took place on 29 March 2012.
