Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague

The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (short for UPM Czech: Uměleckoprůmyslové museum ) is a state museum of Decorative Arts in Prague's Josefov.

History

The museum was founded in 1885 by the Trade and Industry Chamber of Prague as Arts and Crafts Museum. By 1900, the first collections were housed in the Rudolfinum, until the 1897-1899 built according to the plans of the Prague architect Josef Schulz Museum's new building was opened in 1900. Through the donation of the glass collection of the art historian and collector Gustav Edmund Pazaurek the museum in 1932 won international renown. Between 1959 and 1969, the Museum of Decorative Arts lost its independence as a part of the National Gallery in Prague.

Collections

The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague houses the most comprehensive collection of applied art in the Czech Republic. The exhibits of arts and crafts, applied art and design come from the entire period from late antiquity to the present. The focus is mainly in European art, with an emphasis on the Czech lands. The exhibition rooms of the permanent collection are named thematically according to their contents: glass, ceramic and porcelain hall, halls for the "Art of Fire", the Uhrsaal for "Time Machine ", the graphic hall for " printing and imaging ," the furniture hall for the "History of the materials," and the textiles and fashion hall for the "History of the fiber".

In addition to the collections in the main building, the UPM has branch offices in Prague's Hradcany (Galerie Josefa Sudka ) and the cities of Česká Skalice ( Bohemian Skalitz ) Kamenice nad Lipou ( Kamnitz in Linde ) and Klášterec nad Ohri ( Klášterec Eger).

Library

The Library of the Arts and Crafts Museum has around 172,000 media, the biggest Czech special library for all topics of art and art history. It includes an extensive arts encyclopedia, dictionaries, reference books, and magazines.
