Muttahida Qaumi Movement

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement ( Urdu متحدہ قومی موومنٹ; German United People's Movement, MQM) is a liberal party in Pakistan and at the same time representing the interests of the minority of the Muhajir.

It is the fourth largest political party of Pakistan and is in the province of Sindh and in Islamabad in a coalition with the Pakistan People's Party.

History

Foundation

The party was founded in 1984 by Altaf Hussain and Imran Farooq. The MQM has a significant influence in Karachi. The murder of one of their party leaders led in August 2010 riots in the city, which had 45 deaths resulted.

Also on March 20 and 21, 2011, it came to the murder of an MQM member fighting between MQM members and members of the minority of Pashtuns in Karachi. There were at least 16 deaths in 24 hours.

Yousaf Raza Gilani Government

After the parliamentary elections of 2008, the MQM joined a coalition government of Pakistan People's Party ( PPP), Muslim League (PML -N) and other small parties under Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. This occurred in the spring of 2008 to work.

On 2 January 2011, the MQM walked out of the Pakistani government under Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. The reason poor performance of government, lack of success in the fight against violent Islamists, high inflation and corruption were cited. As an ultimate trigger the 9 -percent price increases on gasoline and kerosene are called early this year. Five days later, on January 7, the government announced the MQM again join. The price increases had previously been withdrawn.

In the parliamentary elections of 2013, the MQM lost 2 seats ( from 25 to 23 ) and 2 percent voting share ( from 7.4 to 5.4 ).
