Myer Galpern

Myer Galpern, Baron Galpern, of Shettleston in the District of the City of Glasgow, DL ( born January 1, 1903 in Glasgow, † September 23, 1993 ) was a British Labour Party politician, the first Jewish mayor of Glasgow, twenty years long member of the House of Commons and a few years was Deputy speaker of the House and 1979 was as a life peer, due to the Life peerages Act 1958 a member of the House of Lords.

Life

Galpern, son of a Jewish interior decorator graduated, after visiting the Hutcheson 's Boys ' Grammar School to study at the University of Glasgow and later opened a private room equipment business in Glasgow.

His political career began in local politics when he was elected in 1932 as the representative of the Labour Party as a member of the city council of Glasgow (Glasgow Corporation), and this remained a member until 1960. In 1958 he was elected to succeed Andrew Hood for the first Jewish mayor (Lord Provost of Glasgow ) and held this function in which he was also Chairman of the City Council two years until its replacement by Jean Roberts 1960.

In the general election of October 8, 1959, he was first elected to succeed his party colleague John McGovern in Glasgow Shettleston constituency as an MP in the House of Commons. In this election, he could ( 60.9 percent) clearly against his challenger by the Conservative Party, DE Donaldson, by contact with an absolute majority of votes 22,916 who came only to 14,743 votes ( 39.2 percent). In the subsequent general election, he was re-elected with absolute majorities in each case and belonged to the House of Commons until his waiver of a renewed candidacy in the general election on 3 May 1979.

On February 12, 1960 Galpern was made a Knight Bachelor and led henceforth the additional name "Sir". On September 10, 1962 he was additionally appointed to one of the Deputy Lieutenant of the County of the City of Glasgow.

Deputy House Speaker and the House of Lords member

1974 Galpern was initially the second deputy chairman of the ( non-existent ) Committee on Ways and Means ( Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means ) and was last on 3 February 1976 to 15 May 1979 First Deputy Chairman of this " Committee ". He served as a Deputy Speaker of the House ( Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons ).

By Letters Patent of July 10, 1979 Galpern was due to the Life peerages Act levied in 1958 as a Life peer with the title Baron Galpern, of Shettleston in the District of the City of Glasgow, in the peerage, and was until his death in the House of Lords as a member.

Its official launch (House of Lords) took place on 14 June 1978 with the support of Samuel Segal, Baron Segal, and Reginald Wells- Pestell, Baron Wells- Pestell. Baron Galpern was chairman of numerous Jewish charities in Glasgow.
