Mykhailo Khanenko

Michael Khanenko (Ukrainian Ханенко Михайло Степанович, Polish Michał Khanenko, * 1620, † 1680 in Baturyn, Ukraine) was a Ukrainian Cossack and in the years 1669-1674 Hetman in the right bank Ukraine.

Michael Khanenko, as the son of Stepan Khanenko a known Cossack officer's family and took 1648-1657 as a supporter of Bohdan Khmelnytsky in the run of this rebellion against Poland - Lithuania in part. From 1656 to 1660 and from 1664 to 1669 he was Colonel of the Regiment Umanj and supported in this role the pro- Polish hetmans Yuri Khmelnitsky and Pawlo Teterja.

1670 Khanenko joined as supporters and opponents Suchowijs Petro Petro Doroshenko the Hetman in appearance. He had been proclaimed by the Cossack hetman Petro Suchowij to the right bank Ukraine and agreed with the Polish King Michael on the autonomy of the Cossack. Poland recognized him in the summer of 1670 as hetman. As a result, he received lands in the left-bank Ukraine and lived for some time in Volhynia.

In the years 1677/1678 he was accused by Russia of renewed contact with Poland and imprisoned by Samojlowytsch in Baturyn, where he died.
