Mykhajlo Levitsky

Mihail Lewicki (. Polish: Michał Lewicki, Ukrainian: Михайло Левицький, English Mychajlo Levyckyj ) ( born August 16, 1774 Lanczyn; † January 14, 1858 in Univ Lavra ) was Cardinal and Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lviv archeparchy in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria.

Biography

The son of Ukrainian priest Stefan Lewicki was ordained a priest after studying theology and philosophy in Vienna and Lviv in 1798. He was in 1808 professor of pastoral theology at the Lviv University and was elected in 1808 in the cathedral chapter of archeparchy Lviv. At the age of 39 years, was appointed on 20 September 1813 bishop in the eparchy of Przemysl and on the same day in Vienna by Antoni Angelowicz the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lviv consecrated. On March 8, 1816, he was the successor of Antoni Angelowicz as Metropolitan Archbishop of Lviv. In the consistory of 16 June 1856 he was called by Pope Pius IX. created cardinal. For health reasons he was unable to travel to Rome to answer to the Kardinalsbirett from the hand of the Pope, he withdrew to the monastery of Univ. The Pope appointed an apostolic delegate who visited him at the monastery and he brought the Insignia.

He died at the Univ monastery and was buried according to his will there.

In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria he possessed as Lemberger Metropolitan over a Virilstimme in the Galician parliament.
