N. Scott Momaday

N. Scott Momaday ( born February 27, 1934 in Lawton, Oklahoma ) is an Indian- American writer, literary critic and painter.

" N. " stands for " Navarre ". Momaday is a son of writer Scott Momaday Natachee and the painter Al Momaday, who occasionally also illustrated publications of his son. It belongs to the tribe of Kiowa.

For his first novel, House Made of Dawn 1969, he was awarded the first ever indigenous Americans won the Pulitzer Prize. In the same year he received a professorship at the University of California at Berkeley, where he lectured on English literature and comparative literature. In 1969 he was included in the Gourd Dance Society of Kiowa and published 1976 on these experiences the poetry book The Gourd Dancer. As a literature professor who teaches in particular to Indian literature, Momaday was in 1973 at Stanford University, in 1982 at the University of Arizona in Tucson and held guest lectures at the Lomonosov University in Moscow ( 1974), at Princeton University, Columbia University and in Europe, for example, at the University of Regensburg.

Since 1974, Momaday operated as a painter and draftsman. He had many exhibitions in the USA and illustrated his books now itself

Momaday is considered one of the most prominent representatives of modern Indian culture, the deep insights into the problems and spirituality of Indians like to connect with academic reflection.

He lives with his wife Barbara Momaday in Jemez Springs and Santa Fe.
