History

The city was founded in 1901 on the last Indian land directly on the huge Fort Sill, one of the most important forts and military installations in the U.S. West, with which it forms a symbiotic relationship today. It was named after General Henry Ware Lawton (* 1843, † 1899) named.

In Fort Sill Indian chief Geronimo is buried. Numerous vestiges point to the more or less peaceful coexistence between the military and the Indians in the Wichita Mountains.
