Naftali Herz Imber

Naphtali Imber heart (also: Naftali ), ( * 1856 in Zloczow, Galicia, Austria - Hungary, † October 8, 1909 in Manhattan, New York, United States) was a Jewish poet. His poem Hatikvah ( The Hope) was the text of the Israeli national anthem.

Imber went in 1882 as secretary of Laurence Oliphant to Palestine, moved to his death in 1888 to England and eventually lived from 1892 impoverished in the United States. His body was reburied in 1953 to Jerusalem.

Imber wrote Hatikvah probably in 1878, it was published in 1886 in his collection of poems Barkai ( Morgenstern ).
