Nagynyárád

Nagynyárád ( German: Großnaarad, Croatian: Veliki Narad ) is a municipality in the south of Hungary in Baranya county and belongs to the small area of ​​Mohács.

Location

Larger towns in the area are Bóly, Mohács and Villány. Danube River and the Croatian border is only a few kilometers. In Sátorhely 5 km away is the memorial of the Battle of Mohács.

History

The village was inhabited until the 18th century mainly by Slavs, to be moved from the Maria Theresa Germans ( Danube Swabians) they gradually displaced. The residents of the community were and are today largely Catholic. The hardest blow hit the Naarader 1946-1948, when 330 people were then expelled only in the western to the eastern occupation zone of Germany. Although most returned from East Germany to Großnaarad, they had to start everything again, because their homes with all their wealth by the Hungarian authorities to settlers from Hungary and Felvidék ( now Slovakia ) were given.

Großnaarad preserved its Germanness, although the village was not spared from deportation after the Second World War. According to the German local self-government about 60 % of the inhabitants are German or of German descent. In the 2011 census described themselves in Nagynyárád 639 people as ethnic Hungarians, 320 as German, 34 Croats and 15 as Roma ( cigány - romani, BEAS ).

Traditions and events

Today is traditionally produced wine in the vineyards. Most families that live in the village, have a wine cellar in the vineyards. There, the wine is stored and cooled in large wooden barrels.

The church is known today primarily for Martin fun fair and the dyer Festival. While the latter, on the last weekend in July, takes place every year, the Martin fun fair every other year, held on the weekend of November 11.

The Martin fun fair is a celebration of local Germanness that the end of the autumn harvest celebrates on this day. For the occasion of the village women an approximately 10 meter high tree is adorned with fair autumn flowers on Saturday, which is supported and installed on Sunday in a costume parade to the church. This is followed by a dance.

The main attraction of the village is the dyer 's workshop János ( John ) Sárdi. In his workshop, visitors can also admire the process of dyeing and the old tools of the master. The custom built materials are also for sale. Johann Sárdi is in Hungary, but also abroad a recognized dyer, so the idea for the festival came dyer. During the three -day festival, various events take place: dyer and handicrafts exhibition, folk performances, arts and crafts market, dance festival. Since the festival takes place in mid-summer, visitors can also visit the cellar of the local winery and participate in wine tastings.
