Nahr al-Bared

Nahr al -Bared (Arabic نهر البارد Nahr al- Barid, literally: Cold River ) is a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, 16 km north of the city of Tripoli. Home to around 31,000 refugees.

History

Nahr al -Bared has existed since 1949. Since 1950 it is run by UNRWA. In the 1980s it came to fighting in the camp with heavy losses. In November 2006, founded the camp, the radical Islamic separatist group Fatah al- Islam. Also, the training facilities and the headquarters of this organization were in the camp ..

Between May and September 2, 2007, there was heavy fighting between the Lebanese Army and Fatah al -Islam. The camp was destroyed in the fighting for the most part and many residents fled to the nearby refugee camp Beddawi. In the battles more than 130 fighters of Fatah al -Islam, including its leadership, 157 Lebanese soldiers and 42 civilians were killed. The Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora announced rebuild to the warehouse under Lebanese control.
