Nam Il

Nam Il ( born June 5, 1913 in Kyongwon, sub-province Kankyo - hokudo, Chosen Province, at that time the Japanese Empire, present-day North Korea, † March 7, 1976 in Pyongyang, North Korea) was a North Korean military officer and politician.

Nam Il studied to September 1939 in the Soviet Union. As captain of the Red Army, he fought in the Battle of Stalingrad. As chief of staff, he participated in the Battle of Warsaw. In 1945, he came up with the Soviet troops to Pyongyang, in its Korean homeland. In 1946 he was a member of the Provisional People's Committee. Since 1948, the founding year of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Nam was a deputy of the Supreme People's Assembly.

As Chief of Staff of the Korean People's Army Nam participated in the Korean War and signed in July 1953 in Panmunjeom with U.S. General William Harrison the ceasefire agreement.

After the war, Nam was from 1953 to 1967 Foreign Minister of North Korea.
