Nanded ( Marathi: नांदेड, Nanded ) is an Indian city with approximately 550,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the capital of the district of Nanded in Marathwada region of Maharashtra state.

Geography

The city lies at an altitude of 346 m above sea level. NN on the north bank of the Godavari. Nearest large city is Aurangabad, about 200 km west- northwest.

History

According to legend, the Pandavas already traveled through the city. 1708, a year after the death of Aurangzeb, came Gobind Singh, the tenth spiritual leader of the Sikhs, in the city and proclaimed himself Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. Nanded has since become an important Gurdwara.
