Nantwich and Market Drayton Railway

The Nantwich and Market Drayton Railway was a British railway company in Cheshire and Shropshire in England.

History

Under the name " Market Drayton and Madeley Railway" began planning for the construction of a railway line between Nantwich and Market Drayton. The company was founded as Nantwich and Market Drayton Railway on 7 June 1861 to build a standard gauge railway line. The first chairman was Reginald Corbet of Adderley. It was financed by shares amounting to 60,000 pounds Sterling and bonds in the amount of 20,000 pounds sterling. The 14.6 km long line was opened on 20 October 1863. Originally, the operation of the line by the London and North Western Railway should be done, however, the Great Western Railway was bound as an operator from date of startup.

Together with the Wellington and Market Drayton Railway and the routes of the London and North Western Railway Nantwich / Crewe to Manchester section of a connection between the network of the Great Western Railway in Wellington and Manchester was prepared. 1864 was again capital requirement of 80,000 pounds sterling, to provide the single-track route with another route track. Again, 60,000 pounds were taken in shares and £ 20,000 in bonds. With effect from 1 July 1897, the company was taken over by the Great Western Railway.
