Rare Replies to 1 e2- e4

1 ... a7 - a6

After the trains 1 e2- e4 a7 - a6? ( in English St. George Defense or Defense Baker called ), a very rarely played defense, whose goal is a construction with ... b7 - b5 second and subsequent Fianchettierung the ladies runner. The train a7 - a6 edge farmer therefore has similar ideas as the Sokolski opening ( 1 b2- b4). Since the black players but after this train nor a tempo against the whites, who also owns the suit advantage loses, and takes the opportunity to achieve immediate counterplay in the center, this defense is, therefore, very seldom played and is also poorly understood.

Caused a sensation in 1980, this black opening choice of the English grandmaster Tony Miles in his game against the then World Champion Anatoly Karpov. Miles won by an inaccuracy of the Russians in the middle game.

Variants

By train 2 Lf1 - c4? can the white man set a trap, because black is now not with ... b7 - b5 2? can continue without getting into a disadvantage. It follows namely the bishop sacrifice:

On 2 Lf1 - c4 e7 - e6 Black can, however! respond, after which pull b7 - b5 or d7 -d5 once again the runner must according to the following pawn advance.

In models without early Bc4 a diverter in the Modern Defence by 2 ... g7- g6 and 3 ... Bf8 - g7 is quite possible.
