Modern Defense

In the modern defense, also Robatsch - defense (according to Karl Robatsch ), there is a opening of chess. It is one of the half- open games and is classified in the ECO codes under the key B06.

It begins with the moves:

1 e2- e4 g7- g6

The Modern Defence has independent significance when Black holds back the development of the knight on g8 and the Fianchetto the runner early pressure on the white pawn d4 based on g7. Additional pressure comes directly in contact with Sb8 - c6, e7 - e5, c7 - c5 or indirectly with the bondage of Nf3 Bg4 by.

Through restraining the knight on g8 White can take other options than in the Pirc Ufimtsev - defense, for example, also play c2 - c4 or c2 - c3.

Against white superstructure with optional 3rd or 4th Nb1 - c3 touted as the tiger Hillarp Persson after 3 ... d6 d7 a7 - a6 ... 4. The intended gain of space on the queenside with Sb8 - d7, c7 - c5 - b7 b5, b7 - Bc8. This structure is similar to the Hippopotamus opening.

With early Ng8 - f6 the game goes through diverter almost always in the Pirc Defense Ufimtsev or if White c2 - c4 has played in the King's Indian defense on.

Designation

Robatsch himself rejected the label from Modern Defence and preferred the term Robatsch - defense: "For some, technically not serious theorists attempting to train g6 as being an modern, invented by a collective opening. " Here, these theorists were based on games from the years 1965-1976 contrast Robatsch argues that was occupied by his own game material that he had used the opening already in the years 1945 to 1976 -. During a time in which this opening " had been " frowned upon and ridiculed.
