The Indian nuclear power plant Narora (also Narora Atomic Power Station - called NAPS ) is located about 200 km from the capital city of Uttar Pradesh Lucknow away in the district of Bulandshahar. It has two schwerwassermoderierte pressurized water reactors ( PHWR ) with 220 megawatts of power. Narora -1 was handed over on 1 January 1991 into commercial operation, Narora -2 on July 1, 1992.

On 2 June 2000, the NAPS the Golden Peacock Award for Environmental Leadership by the World Environment Foundation ( WEM) has been awarded a prestigious award in India.

In September 2005, the government decided to allocate $ 53 million to modernize the cooling system. Thus, the term shall be extended by 25 years.

Accidents

On 31 May 1993, there was a momentous fire in the turbine plant of Narora -1; enhanced by the melting of the wiring of the reactor was almost the meltdown. This was prevented, as workers manually poured boron in the core in order to bring the chain reaction to a halt. The workers were exposed to significant radiation. The accident was classified on the INES International Atomic Energy Agency in Level 3 ( serious incident ).
