Nathan Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild

Nathan Mayer Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild, called Natty ( born November 8, 1840 † 31 March 1915 in London ) was a British politician and the third generation of the descendants of Mayer Amschel Rothschild banker.

Nathan Rothschild attended Trinity College ( Cambridge ) not finish and was a personal friend of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII

Family

On April 16, 1867 he married Emma Louise von Rothschild ( 1844-1935 ), his cousin Frankfurt. They had the following children

  • Lionel Walter Rothschild 2.Baron Rothschild ( 1868-1937 ), banker and zoologist
  • Charlotte Louisa Adela Evelina (1873-1947), married in 1899 Major Clive Behrens
  • Nathaniel Charles (1877-1923), married in 1907 Rozsiko of Wertheimstein; committed suicide in 1923

Baron

1847 the title Baronet de Rothschild, of Tring Park was for his uncle Anthony de Rothschild ( 1810-1876 ) created. Since this was childless, the title passed to his nephew Nathan Mayer Rothschild. 1885 got this one seat in the House of Lords, was appointed Baron Rothschild and thus elevated to the British hereditary aristocracy. Nathan Mayer Rothschild was the first Jewish member of the British House of Lords; in contrast to Benjamin Disraeli he was not converted to Christianity.

Banker

Nathan Mayer Rothschild joined the bank his grandfather Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), NM Rothschild & Sons, and after the death of his father Lionel Nathan Rothschild (1808-1879) even their owners. He forgave risk capital to private companies and loans to the governments of the U.S., Russia and Austria. The Russian loan of his grandfather in 1822, which was valid until 1917, is considered the first European bond as they changed in the individual country currencies in London, Frankfurt, Paris, Vienna and St. Petersburg and their dividend could be collected there.

About the financial participation of the Rothschilds at the Suez Canal became friends with the Baron Benjamin Disraeli.

The Baron funded Cecil Rhodes in the development of the British South Africa Company and De Beers. After his death in 1902, he managed the assets and thus founded the Rhodes Scholarship at the University of Oxford.

MP and faith

From 1865 to 1889 he was a member of the House of Commons. The Baron was the driving force behind the elimination of the Liberal Unionists of the Liberal Party in 1886.

Almost 40 years, 1877-1915, he was serving as the president of the United Synagogue, which is based on Torah and Halacha. He financed privately departure of Mendel Beilis after the Beilis affair of 1913, the Russian Empire. His son Walter Rothschild took over as Conservative Member of Parliament in 1917 by Arthur Balfour opposed the so-called Balfour Declaration, which preceded the establishment of the State of Israel.
