National Championship of Excellence

The Campionato di Excellency is the leading competition for rugby union in Italy. The first championship was held in 1929. Is organized the championship of the Federazione Italiana Rugby. The strongholds of the Italian Rugby are nearly all situated in the north of the country, mainly in Lombardy and Veneto.

In 2002, was reorganized as the best ten teams formed the new league Super 10. Since the 2010/11 season the championship carries the current name and includes twelve teams. The two best teams are eligible to play in the European Cup European Challenge Cup competition. Benetton Rugby Treviso and Zebre, the two strongest Italian teams are not represented in the Campionato di Excellency, but in the multinational Pro12 and the Heineken Cup.
