2005 parliamentary elections

In the parliamentary elections in Iraq on 30 January 2005, the United Iraqi Alliance won with 4.075 million voters, 48.1 percent of the vote and placed 140 out of 275 deputies, the largest group in the transitional parliament.

From the Shiite alliance, the majority Shiite population hoped for a takeover of power from which she was excluded during the reign of belonging to the Sunni minority former President Saddam Hussein and his Arab Socialist Baath Party. A crucial role is played by the Grand Ayatollah Ali al -Sistani. As- Sistani was born in Iran, but has over 50 years spent in Iraq. He came in the 1990s with the Iraqi Shiites to high esteem. His criticism of the Iraq plans of the United States has made him even more popular in Iraq. Some Shiite preachers call it a religious duty to vote for the accepted of as- Sistani electoral alliance. The UIA has an influential advocate, who, however, explicitly does not support the parties in the Shiite Grand Ayatollah Ali al -Sistani.

On the list of UIA is also the Shiite nuclear scientist Hussain al-Shahristani, who was allegedly found at the direction of al- Sistani himself to a high position of the candidate list.

In the parliamentary elections of 15 December 2005, the United Alliance received 5 million votes ( 41.1 %) and, thus 128 seats in parliament.
