National parks of the United Kingdom

In the UK there are 15 national parks. The parks are distributed as follows:

The three first national parks were established in 1951 in England.

In Northern Ireland, there are no national parks, but there are efforts of a park in the Mourne Mountains to set up.

National Parks in England

The new national park in England cover about 7% of the land area.

The national parks in England and Wales subject to the provisions of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. Unlike the national parks in many other countries, the English national parks are not owned by the state and not under state administration. Each National Park is managed by a separate National Park office. The national parks can even include larger settlements. A large part of the National Park area is privately owned.

Estimated 110 million people per year visit the National Parks in England and Wales.

National Parks in Wales

The three National Parks in Wales covering approximately 20 % of the country.

National Parks in Scotland

The two national parks in Scotland cover about 7% of the land area.
