National Union (Portugal)

The National Union ( União Nacional Portuguese, UN ), the Unity Party of the Portuguese Estado Novo regime.

The party was founded in 1930 during the Ditadura Nacional ( National German dictatorship ). Officially, it was not a political party, but an "organization of the unity of all Portuguese ". From 1934 to 1973, she always won all elections all seats of the Assembleia da República.

In 1970, two years after Marcelo Caetano António de Oliveira Salazar was succeeded as party leader, the party name in Acção Nacional Popular ( German National People's Action ) has been amended. The party was dissolved after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and democracy was restored.
