Navagraha

Navagraha (Sanskrit, नवग्रह, navagraha, nine planets or nine realms) is characterized in traditional Hindu astronomy the nine "planets" in heaven personified forms. In contrast to Greek astronomy all planetary gods are male in Hinduism.

' Nava ' means ' nine'. " Graha " is sometimes translated as " planet," but Sun, Moon and Rahu and Ketu are not planets in the sense of today's astronomy. Sometimes " Graha " is translated as "celestial body ", but Rahu and Ketu are in the sense of Western astronomy no celestial bodies. A third translation would demigod, but Rahu and Ketu are Asuras, no Devas. Allen Navagrahas in common is that they move relative to the fixed zodiac sign of the background.

In the Kaveri delta in Tamil Nadu, there is a group of nine Navagraha temples, each dedicated to one of the nine Navagrahas. Another famous Navagraha temple is located in Guwahati in Assam.
