Naviglio Grande

The Naviglio Grande is the oldest Naviglio (channel) of Milan.

It was built in the years 1177 to 1257 and gets its water from the Ticino (Tessin ). About 50 km long, he served as a transport route between Milan and Lake Maggiore ( and including Switzerland ). The blocks of marble needed for the construction of the cathedral, but also bulk goods such as coal were shipped to him, where barges were punted through the channel. In the 1960s, the transport traffic was stopped.

The Naviglio is now used as a water dispenser for agriculture. At the end of the channel have a number of pubs and restaurants established on both banks, which are well attended evening and weekend.

From Milan leads along the canal a cycle path to Gaggiano on the right, and from there to Abbiategrasso on the left channel side; like it is used by many joggers.

Are the places Buccinasco, Corsico, Trezzano sul Naviglio, Gaggiano, Vermezzo and Abbiategrasso On the banks.
