Neal S. Wolin

Neal Steven Wolin ( born December 9, 1961) is an American politician and the Deputy Finance Minister of the United States ( Deputy Secretary of the Treasury ).

Wolin was nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama in March 2009 and confirmed in May 2009 by the Senate. Previously, he had been a consultant for economic policy at the White House. Wolin also had eight years worked in the Clinton administration: two years in the White House at the National Security Council and six as a consultant in the Ministry of Finance.

Career

Wolin studied history at Yale University and completed his bachelor's degree summa cum laude. He then studied as Charles and Julia Henry Fellow at Oxford University, where he earned a master's degree in development economics. Then he graduated from the Yale Law School as a Coker Teaching Fellow.

After his law exams Wolin worked as a researcher for Federal Judge Eugene Nickerson in Brooklyn and taught at Brooklyn Law School. He was responsible for the law firm Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington DC active and then moved into the civil service, where he served as an assistant under three CIA directors: William H. Webster, Robert Gates and James Woolsey. 1993 moved Wolin as a legal adviser to the National Security Council; In 1994 he became assistant to the National Security Adviser Anthony Lake.

In 1995 he left the White House to work as deputy general counsel at the Treasury under Robert Rubin. Wolin spent six years there, and was founded in 1999 under Prime Counsel Lawrence Summers. In January 2001, Summers Wolin awarded the Alexander Hamilton Award, the highest award for employee of the Treasury.

Beginning of 2001 was Wolin visiting scholar at the Brookings Institution and at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In March 2001 he moved to the top management of the Hartford Financial Services Group with responsibility for legal, lobbying, taxes, communications and marketing. In 2007 he was Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of the subsidiaries for real estate and insurance.

Wolin is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
