Pd4

Foghorn is the name of a 2224 m above sea level. NHN high, belonging to the thumb group in the Allgäu Alps mountain summit. There is a cable car, the Nebelhorn cable car to reach in Oberstdorf. The peak area of the foghorn provides the entry point for Hindelanger ferrata.

Location

The fog horn rises in a ridge that runs from the Geißfuß (1981 m above sea level. NHN ) in a northeasterly direction over the heads of the Grand Wengen ( 2280 m above sea level. NHN ) and Small thumbs ( 2197 m above sea level. NHN ). In this case, the foghorn is situated between the Western and Geißfuß Wengen head.

The Vertical separation of the foghorn is at least 24 meters, his dominance at 500 meters, where in each case the Western Wengen mountain is head reference.

Geology

The fog horn owes its special character to the location on the border between the Northern Limestone Alps and upstream Flyschbergen: The summit is composed of the main dolomite of the Limestone Alps, the lower slope of flysch.

Origin of the name

The foghorn was first mentioned in 1811 in a tax register of the control district Oberstdorf. 1819 was followed by the mention in Uraufnahmeblatt the Bavarian State Survey, both times as a foghorn. The name derives from the view of the mountain from the top Illertal. From here the mountain could have been used to predict a change in the weather, when the summit was shrouded in fog.

The Edmund -Probst -Haus

Already on May 25, 1890 inaugurated the German Alpine Club eV (DAV ) is a mountain hut as a foghorn house and later called it after the Section Executive Edmund- Probst- house. The hut is located in avalanche safer location at the foot of the peak recovery and had to be enlarged again and again. It is located in 1,932 meters above sea level and is maintained during the winter for skiers and snowshoe walkers and in summer for hikers and climbers.

Winter sports

In winter, the ski resort with two chairlifts, three gondolas and a ski lift from the village of Oberstdorf is reachable. The slopes range includes pistes of varying difficulty. There is also a halfpipe at the station Höfatsblick and a toboggan run from the station Seealpe the valley.
