Daumengruppe

The thumb group is a subgroup of the Allgäu Alps in Germany. The name is derived from the Big Thumb, the highest 2280 meter mountain in the group. Many of the peaks in the group are frequently visited destinations and mostly accessible by hiking trails. The best-known components of the thumb group are the Nebelhorn and the Hindelanger ferrata. At Schneck ( 2268 m) and sky Horn ( 2111 m ), there are classic, very challenging climbs. At the foot of Shadow Mountain (1845 m) near Oberstdorf is held annually on the Schattenbergschanze the opening event of the Four Hills Tournament instead.

Boundaries and environment

To the north and east of the Valley of the Ostrach limits the thumb group. Completing the eastern boundary is the Bärgündeletal that culminates in the south Himmelecksattel (2007 m). From here we descend into Oybachtal that leads west to the Iller Valley near Oberstdorf. From there, the boundary Iller runs downhill to Sonthofen, where discharges from the east the Ostrach. Ambient subgroups of the Allgäu Alps are the Vilsalpseeberge, Hochvogel group with which the thumb group is connected via the Himmelecksattel and Höfatsgruppe clockwise.

The thumb group is divided into three small groups, which are characterized by their characteristic appearance. The northwestern part form relatively low mountain ranges, which have more " character Alps ". This is limited by the Savior Pregnant valley to the east. There follows a chain to the southeast striking rock peaks and a karst plateau, the Koblat. This part goes again to the southeast over to the known steep grass Allgäu mountains, which form the third small group.

The whole area of the thumb group is located on German territory and in the state of Bavaria. Comprehensive community areas are Bad Hindelang Oberstdorf and Sonthofen.

Mountains

The highest mountain of the group is the Great Thumb ( 2280 m) in the center of the group. Next to him, two more mountains reach a height of over 2200 meters: Schneck ( 2268 m), Western Wengen head ( 2235 m). More striking mountains of the group are the laughing head ( 2111 m), Entschenkopf ( 2043 m), Rotspitze ( 2034 m), snip head (1833 m) and Imberger Horn ( 1655 m).

Geology

Analogous to the above three -part subdivision allows the geological structure of the thumb group describe. The northwestern part of the snip head (1833 m ) belongs to the flysch zone, builds the mountains of marls, sandstones and mudstones. While pulling this ridge as an optical unit to the northeast, but Horn is most composed of Hauptdolomit Imberger the thrust of the flysch zone with Alpine limestone layers. This thrust is built on the summit of the ridge to the Wengen heads and the Great thumb from main dolomite, including lie Kössener layers and stain marl. The strata dip to the south, from which the ball falls to the north and the gentler terrain forms arise, for example on Koblat. Even further to the southeast close to the area around the worm the steep grass hills on. Here the visible surface of stain marls, Aptychenkalken and red chert is formed, all of which produce botanical diversity.

Lakes

Some of the geological layers that occur in the thumb group, have water- jamming features. Where they occur relatively close to the surface, can form lakes, for example. You are propagated in the vicinity of the middle group thumb part. The largest lake is with an area of 0,075 square kilometers of Seealpsee ( 1622 m) dar. It is followed by 0.033 km ² Lower Gaisalpsee ( 1508 m) and 0.03 km ² of Engeratsgundsee (1876 m). Other lakes are the Laufbichlsee (2012 m), the Koblatsee (1966 m) and the Upper Gaisalpsee (1769 m).

Nature

Where cherts, marls and stain Aptychenkalke characterize the sub-base, shows a large botanical diversity. On the north ridge of Schnecks to Yellow alpine cowbells find (Anemone sulphurea ). At the crest of Salober ( 2088 m ) over the Berggächtle (2007 m) to the gable (1948 m ) are arachnoideum Houseleek (Sempervivum arachnoideum ) and a hybrid with its mountain - Houseleek, named Sempervivum montanum × arachnoideum ago. This also the roof Houseleek grows (Sempervivum tectorum ). On the ridge above the summit between pointer (1995 m) and laughing head ( 2111 m) grow the rare True Moonwort ( Botrychium lunaria ) and the ostrich bellflower (Campanula thyrsoides ).

Much of the thumb group is located in the nature reserve Allgäu High Alps.

Alpinism

Alpine Club huts in the thumb group are the Edmund -Probst -Haus (1927 mm) at the foot of the foghorn and the black mountain hut ( 1380 m) above the background Tal. From Oberstdorf Nebelhorn leads up to the Nebelhorn, thus opening up the central part of the group.

Hiking and Mountaineering

Because of access to the group by a funicular railway, the walks around the foghorn are very popular. From here, star-shaped paths lead into the environment. They usually lead to the lakes in the area, but also to summits such as the Rubihorn (1957 m). Equally well developed are the mountains over Bad Hindelang and Sonthofen. On Imberger Horn Horn train people transported towards the summit.

From the Nebelhorn and Edmund- Probst- house of Laufbacher - corner path under Big ( 2085 m) and Small Seekopf leads ( 2096 m), the Schochen (2100 m) to run Eck ( 2178 m) and from there to Prince Luitpold house (1846 m). From Oberstdorf passes under the Nebelhorn cable car up a geological study and travel path to the foghorn.

Hindelanger ferrata

With the Hindelanger ferrata one of the most popular via ferrata in Bavaria through the thumb group. It runs between the fog horn and the width of the mountain (1893 m) at the crest. First, it goes over the heads Wengen ( 2235 m and 2207 m) and the onion strings Big Thumb. From there he finds his sequel to Little Thumb ( 2197 m ) and on the Heubatspitze (2008 m) to the width of the mountain. The difficulty of the via ferrata is given as B / C and I-II. From the main section between the paths heads and the Big Thumb, there are three Notabstiege.

Rock climbing

Some walls of the thumb group Allgaeu climbing history was made. Established in 1922 Philipp Risch and his companions a tour of the east wall of the worm, the long time the most difficult route ( VI, A0) represented in the Allgäu Alps. A "milestone" in the Allgäu Climbing history came in 2000 the brothers Jürgen and Michael Roth sheep together with Toni Steurer in the east wall Schneck: The gray element (VIII ).

In the sky, Horn ( 2111 m) is the Rädlergrat a difficult classics (V, A0 or VI), the famous climbers like Gaston Rébuffat or Hermann Buhl committed. In the south wall of the sky horn 1958 Michael exchanger and W. Teufele committed a route ( VI, A3), which is a " free climbing problem " today. In 2000, Matthias Robl opened on the edge of southern wall of the route Sky Ride ( XI ). On the south wall of the Eastern Wengen head ( 2207 m) opened in 1994 Robert Jasper and Stefan Meineke in the south wall of the route La Traviata (VIII ).
