Necdet Öztorun

Necdet Öztorun (* 1924 in Konya, † October 7, 2010 in Ankara ) was a Turkish general and last commander of the land forces.

Biography

After schooling he joined in 1941, the armed forces and was a graduate of the Military Academy ( Işıklar Asker Hava Lisesi ) and during the Second World War Gunner. After this he started in 1943 as an officer at the military school ( Kara Harp Okulu ) and then training at the Armored School ( Topçu Sınıf Okulu ). In 1959 he was graduated from the Military Academy ( Kara Harp Akademisi ).

1967 was his promotion to brigadier general ( Tuğgeneral ) and the appointment as commander of the 33rd Infantry Brigade. After use in the General Staff in 1972, he was promoted to Major General ( Tümgeneral ) and was in the following years, among other commander of the 51st Infantry Division and Head of Strategy and Planning in the General Staff of Turkey.

In 1976 he was appointed Lieutenant General ( Korgeneral ) and was the first Commanding General of the 6th Corps and then the 2nd Corps. After his promotion to General ( Orgeneral ), he was first deputy chief of staff, then commander of the 1st Army in Istanbul- Üsküdar.

On August 12, 1985, he eventually became the successor of Ali Haydar Saltık Commander of Land Forces ( Türk Kara Kuvvetleri Komutanları ) and held until his retirement on July 2, 1987 this function. Successor was General Necip Torumtay, at the same time was also chief of staff.

Previously, there was speculation that the favored by the General Staff itself would Öztorun chief of the General Staff. Prime Minister Turgut Özal, however, drew general Torumtay as successor of the former Chief of General Staff Necdet Üruğ.

The funeral ceremony was attended by several high-ranking generals as Chief of General Staff Işık Koşaner.
