Neil Ashcroft

Neil W. Ashcroft ( born November 27, 1938 in London ) is a British solid-state physicist.

Ashcroft studied at the University of New Zealand (Bachelor 1958) and received his doctorate in 1964 at Cambridge University. He was a post-doc at the University of Chicago and from 1965 to Cornell University, where he became professor in 1975. From 1990, he was there Horace White Professor. In 2006 he retired. 1979-1984 he was the Director of The Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics, 1997 to 2000 by the Center for Material Research and 1990-1997 Deputy Director of the High Energy Synchrotron Source ( synchrotron source).

1986 to 1987 he was Director of the Department of Solid State Physics of the American Physical Society. Since 1997 he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

His textbook on solid state physics with N. David Mermin is a standard work.
