Nelson Williams

Nelson "Cadillac" Williams ( born September 26, 1917 in Montgomery (Alabama ), † November 20, 1973 in Voorburg, Netherlands ) was an American jazz trumpeter, singer and arranger.

Life and work

Williams played 13 years from first piano before switching to the trumpet. His career as a musician began in the 1930s in territory bands like Trianon Crackerjacks, Brown Skin Models and Dixie Rhythm Girls before he worked at Tiny Bradshaw. After the end of World War II, during which he had played in a military band, he joined the band of Billy Eckstine. In the late 1940s he worked with John Kirby, Billy Kyle, and in 1949 at the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1951 with Johnny Hodges. In the same year he moved to Paris, where he participated in recordings of Mary Lou Williams in 1954. After his return to the United States in 1956, he played again with Duke Ellington and led his own formations, with whom he went on tours in Europe. Under his own name he published several singles and EPs on Philips, including cover versions of Rockin 'Chair, All of Me and My Blue Heaven. He can also be heard on the LP Five Horn & Groove All Stars. From 1957 lived in Holland Voorburg Williams; in his later years he played among others with the Pforzheim Quarter Latin jazz band led by Dieter Antritter and the Dutch Swing College Band in 1969 for the last time with Ellington (Paris Jazz Party ). Williams worked between 1949-1970 with 56 recording sessions.
