Nerio I Acciaioli

Nerio I. Acciaiuoli (* first half of the 14th century, † November 1394 ) came from the distinguished Florentine family of Acciaiuoli. He was since 1388 Duke of Athens.

In 1365 he moved from Florence to Greece, where his uncle and adoptive father Niccolò Acciaiuoli had transferred the fiefs Vostitza and Nivelot. Later he was also Lord of Corinth.

Taking advantage of the chaotic conditions in the Catalan Duchy of Athens Nerio 1385 marched with an army of mercenaries over Megara to Attica, and took the lower city of Athens. On May 2, 1388 resulted in the occupation of the Acropolis, so the ending since 1311 Catalan rule ended in Greece. He called himself since "Lord of Corinth and the Duchy ." Unlike his predecessors, he conceded the native Greeks political rights and even tolerated an Orthodox diocese in Athens.

Nerios new duchy was harassed by the Navarrese Company in the Peloponnese and Euboea from Venice. In negotiations with the Venetians in 1389 Nerio got their captivity, out of which could dissolve in 1390 by promising to advocate I. Palaeologus of the Morea for issue of Argos to Venice by his son Theodore. Until then, he had to pledge to Venice Megara.

After the battle Field of Blackbirds 1389, the Ottomans became the dominant power in Greece. The Navarrese Company in 1392 allied himself with them against Nerio, of the supremacy of the Turks was forced to submit. After the conquest of Salona by the Turks in 1394, he tried by a Lehnsnahme to King Ladislaus of Naples, to throw off the Turkish suzerainty. From Ladislaus he also received the title of Duke of Athens. In the same year he moved his son to transfer from Argos to Venice, which Nerio Megara received back. Shortly thereafter, he died.

Nerio was married to Agnese Saraceno, with who had two daughters:

  • Bartolomea Acciaiuoli ( † around 1397 ), Theodoros I. Palaiologos ∞, custodian of the Morea
  • Francesca Acciaiuoli, ∞ with Carlo I. Tocco, Count Palatine of Cephalonia

With its Greek mistress Maria Rendi he had the son, Antonio I. Acciaiuoli.

Nerio imputed his duchy to the protection of Venice and bequeathed to the city of Athens to the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the Latin archbishop of the city was meant.
