Nesmith Ankeny

Nesmith Cornett Ankeny (* 1927 in Walla Walla (Washington ); † August 4, 1993 in Seattle ) was an American mathematician who worked on number theory.

Life

Ankeny studied at Stanford University and was established in 1950 by Emil Artin at Princeton University PhD ( Consequences of the Extended Riemann Hypothesis ). 1951/52, he was at the Institute for Advanced Study. After that, he was Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University before 1955 went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 1964 he received a full professorship. In 1992, he went into retirement.

In addition to analytic number theory - among other things he gave with Artin and Chowla 1953 Sarvadaman congruence formulas for the class number of real quadratic number field - he also dealt with game theory and wrote a book about poker (especially bluffing ). He himself was an avid poker player, but also bridge and chess player.

In 1958 he was Guggenheim Fellow.
