The airbase Neubiberg is a former military airfield in the south of Munich.

Location

The airbase is located on the territory of the municipalities Neubiberg and Unterhaching. The western part of the start and runway crosses the Munich-Salzburg motorway, which runs in a purpose-built tunnel Neubiberg here.

History

The airfield was opened under the name Munich Airport South 1933 and carried out military flight training by the German Air Sports Association. Between 1935 and 1945, the airfield was used by the Air Force. After the Second World War the airfield was initially as Airfield R.85 and later under the name Neubiberg Air Base, a base of the United States Air Force. The base was from October 1950 to November 1952 home base of the F- 84E equipped 86th Fighter Bomber Wing. Between 1952 and 1955 Neubiberg Air Base was phased as an alternative place initially for RF -80 and later C -119, whose home base is at Toul was still under construction.

The German Army took over the base in 1958. Between 1958 and 1971, the Air Transport Squadron 61 was stationed here from 1971 to 1977, the air base group Neubiberg, which was replaced by the Aerodrome Season Neubiberg, which existed until 1991. Between 1971 and 1973, also a Flight Training Division in Neubiberg worked.

Until October 1998, the airfield was used by the Bavarian Police Helicopter Squadron, before they moved to Munich Airport in the Erdinger Moos. Another user was the Flying Club of Munich.

1958 Officers School of the Air Force was moved to Neubiberg. To make room for the newly founded University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich drew the officers' training school in 1973 on the airbase Fürstenfeldbruck.

Current usage

On the southern part of the area of the landscape park was created Hachinger valley. The airstrip has been preserved and part of the park. At the eastern end of the path of the new cemetery of the parish Neubiberg was created. The northern part of the site is used by the University of the Bundeswehr.
