New Edition is an American R & B band from Boston, which was founded in 1978. The original members were Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins. They were discovered by Maurice Starr, one originating from Florida music producer, who moved with his brother Michael in the early 1970s to Boston. The band won a talent contest first time in 1980, then came the last of the thirteen- year-old Ronnie DeVoe it. With their first single Candy Girl in 1983 they had their first international hit (UK # 1 ). The first album of the same name reached number 22 in the U.S. R & B charts and included hits like Candy Girl, Popcorn Love ( number 8 in the U.S. R & B charts ), or Is This The End ( # 25 U.S. R & B charts ). Musically influenced the sound of New Edition was originally by the Jackson Five. 1984 finished the five her collaboration with Maurice Starr and signed in 1984 a new record deal with MCA Records. Their second album, New Edition was released soon thereafter, reached double platinum in the U.S., number one in the U.S. R & B and number six in the U.S. album charts.

The best-known member of the band is Bobby Brown, who had to leave the group in 1986 under pressure from the record company in 1987 and launched a successful solo career in July 1992 Whitney Houston married.

After leaving Brown, it was decided to occupy the square new, and hired for the only non- originating from Boston to Johnny Gill. For now, the upcoming album Heartbreak producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were engaged, whereupon developed the sound of the group in the direction of adult -sounding soul music from simple teen pop of the 1980s. The publication in 1988 led to four million albums sold ( # 3 in the U.S. R & B charts, double platinum ) and thus to the next big record success of the group: If It Is not Love ( # 2 on the U.S. R & B charts, # 7 on the U.S. singles charts ), You're Not My Kind Of Girl ( # 3 on the U.S. R & B charts ), Crucial ( # 4 on the U.S. R & B charts ), NE Heartbreak (ranked 13 in the U.S. R & B charts ) and Can You Stand The Rain ( # 1 on the U.S. R & B chart ) with Johnny Gill as lead voice showed the newfound success potential of the band. Three members - Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe -, in the early 1990s, Bell Biv DeVoe, the band, which was also successful. Mid-1990s and from 2005 New Edition has been revived and is still active.

Brown, Tresvant and Gill are also under the name of Heads of State since the beginning of 2011 in the studio to release an album with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
