New Gate

The New Gate is one of eight gates in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is located on the northwest corner of the walled city area and is compared to the other gates rather unimpressive.

The name New Gate refers to the fact that this gate was set to the old town until 1889, to allow easier access from the Christian quarter of the old town to the new Christian neighborhoods against the wall. From the founding of Israel until the capture of the Old City by the Israeli army in the Six Day War, the passage was closed.
