New Norway, Alberta

New Norway is a village in Alberta, Canada. The first mentioned by name New Norways in 1895 and the official foundation then 1909. The village is located about 100 km southwest of the provincial capital of Edmonton. When - for Canadian standards - relatively large New Norway has a primary and a secondary school, a separate fire station and administrative facilities.

History

About the newly built Canadian Pacific Railway line, the family of the Norwegian Ole M. Olstadt 1892 came to Wetaskiwin, from where they moved on after Duhamel, a small settlement. South of these taught the family farms for himself and relatives and friends from the United States.

After the area had for some time carried the name Olstead District, the name was with the arrival of more - changed around 1895 families in New Norway - not only Norwegian. In 1903 there were in the church, a school, a department store and a blacksmith shop.

In the fall of 1909, the town had to be " moved " because of the construction of a new railway line by a few kilometers. A year later, the first village council with the deputies Norman Smith, James Willows and Evan Olstad was chosen.
