New Stuyahok is a city in Dillingham Census Area, Alaska. According to the 2000 census, there lived 471 people.

Geography

New Stuyahok is located on the Nushagak River, about 20 km upstream from Ekwok.

History

1918 Old Village was relocated to the downstream Mulchatna area. In the 1920s and 30s, the village was incorporated into the reindeer program of the government. But until 1942, the herd had dissolved into nothing. The village was flooded and it was too far upstream to be supplied with boats. So the village was in 1942 relocated downriver to its present location. The first school was built in 1961 and the same year a post office was built. In 1972, the city received city rights.

Culture

New Stuyahok is a village of the Yupik Inuit with Russian Orthodox influence. The inhabitants live from fishing ( salmon) and are self-sufficient. Main sources of meat are moose, caribou, rabbits, ducks and geese.

The New Stuyahok Airport ( IATA code KNW ) State Airport connects New Stuyahok with Ekwok, Dillingham and Koliganek. Small boats, ATVs and snowmobiles are the usual local transport.
