New York City Police Department Emergency Service Unit

The New York City Police Department Emergency Service Unit is the Emergency Service Unit of the New York City Police Department.

As part of the Special Operations Division of the Patrol Services Bureau the unit for special operations and support to other police units in the metropolitan area of New York City is responsible. The canine unit is used for example in the search for suspects and missing persons. The ESU continues to assume the duties of a SWAT unit and thus comes as a hostage to use. Also include interrogators, who were trained for the hearing of hostages, the ESU.

The officials of the ESU have been trained in various police and rescue techniques. Ten so-called Heavy Rescue Trucks ( " Heavy Rescue Truck " ) go all the time all over the city patrol. These are filled with a normal police officers and a sergeant. These often come more than twice as many vehicles of Radio Emergency Patrol, whose crew consists of two police officers. In addition, two or more sergeants or lieutenants are in civilian vehicles on the road, which can monitor ESU inserts at any time and support. These are referred to in the police radio as U- Cars.

Subdivision and regional allocation

The ten Emergency Service Squads (ESS ) are distributed geographically as follows:

  • ESS -1 ( Lower Manhattan )
  • ESS -2 ( Upper Manhattan )
  • ESS -3 (East and South Bronx )
  • ESS 4 (West and North Bronx )
  • ESS -5 ( Staten Iceland )
  • ESS -6 ( South Brooklyn )
  • ESS -7 (East Brooklyn )
  • ESS -8 ( North Brooklyn ) - REP truck,
  • ESS -9 (South- Queens ) - Heavy Rescue Truck,
  • ESS -10 ( Northern Queens ) - REP truck
  • ESS -11 (Dem headquarters assigned )
  • ESS -14 Dangerous goods / rescue train

ESS -11 is not a regular patrol unit, but a stationed in Floyd Bennett Field at the ESU headquarters vehicle, which is staffed with coaches and support units. ESS -11 is for use in emergencies in the vicinity as well as a reserve in the event that other Emergency Service Squads fail.

The supervision of the patrol lead lieutenants who command each several trucks and either the field " U-5 " ( Brooklyn, Queens & Staten Iceland ) or "U -4" (Manhattan & Bronx ) are assigned.

The ESU Canine Unit has 36 handler teams. These include three bloodhounds and several other dogs, which were also trained on finding corpses. The ESU Canine Unit is part of the US- TF1 Urban Search and Rescue Unit of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA ).

Recruitment

Officials who want to join the Emergency Service Unit must have an excellent athletic constitution and have a high mental capacity.

There is a minimum period of five years in regular service before an application to the ESU is possible this annual service review must be at least 3.5. Officers of the rank of sergeant or lieutenant must hold at least these two years before they can go to the ESU.

In addition, all applicants must be assessed by a group of current ESU officer, which are intended to ensure that new members can be successfully integrated into the unit.

On duty police officer killed

No unit of the New York City Police Department lost in the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 as many members as the Emergency Service Unit. 14 of the 23 officers killed at that time belonged to the ESU.

Rolling stock

The Emergency Service Unit has a large number of different vehicles, including:

  • Eleven Heavy Rescue Trucks, which are generally referred to only as "Trucks ". The trucks 1-10 were built by Saulsbury Fire Apparatus, Ferrara Fire Apparatus Truck 11.
  • 40 Radio Emergency Patrol ( REP ) trucks, which are used for regular patrol duty. In each REP truck is diving equipment, emergency medical equipment and tools for the hydraulic rescue operation. The REP trucks are manufactured by Odyssey Specialty Automotive
  • Two ambulances of the ESU Medical Squad
  • Two Lenco Lenco Peacekeeper BearCat and two special cars
  • 14 portable light towers with associated generator, which are distributed over the city. More Genaratoren over 60 kW, 90 kW, 100 kW and 200 kW are kept ready.
  • Four light pole motor vehicles
  • Several Mobile Auxiliary Light Truck ( MALT ) with 100 kW generators
  • Construction Accident Response Vehicles ( CARV ), which are used in case of accidents to stabilize in danger of collapsing buildings and the rescue of trapped people.
  • Emergency Support Vehicle ( ESV ), which include among other things, an inflatable boat and inflatable buoyant cushion.
  • Six jet skis and various dinghy, which are assigned in the normal case other units of the NYPD.
