Newquay ( Cornish: Tewynn Pleustri ) is an English town on the North Cornish coastline and has 19,423 inhabitants (as of 2001).

History

Originally Newquay was a fishing village, which certainly existed in the 15th century on the sheltered west end of Newquay Bay. The town prospered thanks to the local sardine industry, which reached its peak in the 18th century. Large quantities were exported to the Mediterranean countries, mainly to Italy.

A century later, the coal import came up and required an enlargement of the harbor. In addition, a railway line was built across the peninsula to transport kaolin from the quarries near the town of St Austell to Newquay for export at this time. With the expansion of the railway network, and lured by the beautiful sandy beaches of Newquay and the waves of the Atlantic, then sat in the second half of the 19th century the stream of summer visitors.
